Our chosen charity

The market is run as a not-for-profit, and each year we select a local charity who we share our profits with at the end of the year. For 2024, our chosen charity is Newbury Speakability, part of The Stroke Association.

Speakability supports people with Aphasia, which is when a person has difficulty with their language or speech. It's usually caused by damage to the left side of the brain, for example after a stroke.

Aphasia affects people in different ways. Many have difficulties with speaking, reading, writing, numbers, dealing with money and telling the time. Speakability helps to build confidence and develop new skills, through weekly get-togethers and speech therapy.

Speakability meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at the Chequers Hotel in Newbury, and on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at Thatcham Garden Centre. Speech Therapy is available every week.
